Sales Tax Calculator FAQs
What is sales tax?
Sales tax is a consumption tax imposed by the government on the sale of goods and services. It is usually calculated as a percentage of the retail price. While the seller is responsible for collecting the tax from the customer at the point of purchase, the burden of paying it ultimately falls on the consumer. The collected funds are then remitted by the business to the appropriate state and local tax authorities to fund public services like schools, roads, and emergency services.
How do you calculate sales tax?
To calculate sales tax manually, you multiply the price of the item (the subtotal) by the sales tax rate. The formula is: Sales Tax = Item Price × (Tax Rate / 100). For example, if you are selling an item for $100 and the tax rate is 8%, the math would be: 100 × 0.08 = $8.00. The total amount the customer pays would be $108.00. Our calculator automates this math for you instantly.
What is a sales tax nexus?
"Nexus" is a legal term that refers to the connection a business has with a taxing jurisdiction (like a state). If your business has a nexus in a state, you are legally obligated to collect and remit sales tax there. Nexus was traditionally established by having a physical presence (like an office, warehouse, or employee). However, following the 2018 Supreme Court ruling in South Dakota v. Wayfair, "economic nexus" can now be established simply by reaching a certain threshold of sales revenue or transaction volume in a state, even without a physical presence.
How does this Sales Tax Calculator work?
This tool is a flexible, manual calculator designed to help you quickly determine tax amounts when you already know the applicable rate. Simply enter your Subtotal (the pre-tax price) and the Sales Tax Rate percentage for the specific location you are selling to. The tool will instantly calculate the tax amount and add it to the subtotal to show you the final Total Due.
Can I use this calculator for VAT or GST?
Yes. Because this tool allows you to input a custom tax rate and a custom currency symbol, it works for any percentage-based consumption tax, including Value Added Tax (VAT) or Goods and Services Tax (GST). Simply change the currency symbol (e.g., to £ or €) and enter the appropriate VAT/GST percentage in the rate field to get your result.
Who is responsible for collecting sales tax?
The merchant (seller) is responsible for collecting sales tax from the buyer at the time of the transaction. Even though the buyer pays the money, the seller acts as the agent for the state. If a seller fails to collect the tax when required, they may be held personally liable for the uncollected amount, plus interest and penalties, out of their own pocket.
What is the difference between state and local sales tax?
Most sales tax rates are a combination of two things: a statewide base rate and additional local rates. For example, a state might have a 6% tax rate, but the county adds 1% and the city adds another 1.5%. The total sales tax rate the customer pays would be 8.5%. When using this calculator, ensure you enter the combined rate to get the correct total.
Are shipping costs subject to sales tax?
It depends on the state. In some states, shipping and handling charges are considered part of the taxable sale and must be included in the subtotal before tax is calculated. In other states, shipping is tax-exempt if it is listed separately on the invoice. You should check the specific laws of the state where the product is being delivered to determine if you should include shipping costs in your subtotal entry.
What items are exempt from sales tax?
Not every item is taxable. Many states offer exemptions for "necessary" goods to reduce the tax burden on consumers. Common exempt items often include grocery food, prescription medicines, and sometimes clothing (up to a certain price limit). If an item is tax-exempt, the effective sales tax rate for that specific item would be 0%.
