Step 1: We built a review sentiment model by analyzing reviews


We analyzed one million reviews to find the most common words used in 1, 2, and 3-star reviews and in 4 and 5-star reviews.

Classify common words


We classified the most common words in reviews.
The most common words in 1, 2, and 3-star reviews were classified as bad. The most common words in 4 and 5-star reviews were classified as good.

Assign a score


We then assigned each word a score depending on how many times it appeared in each category. Words that often appeared in both categories were discarded.

Step 2: Each review is processed by our algorithm


Detect positive and negative words


Now, when businesses generate reviews through Yotpo, we run every review through our algorithm which detects positive and negative words and their polarity.

The output, from 1-100%, is a ranking of the likelihood that the review contains positive or negative customer sentiment.
