Pura Vida Bracelets was founded in 2010 when co-founders Griffin Thall and Paul Goodman were on vacation in Costa Rica. After meeting local artisans selling handmade bracelets, they saw an opportunity to start a business that would give back to communities both in Costa Rica and the U.S.
Four years later, the San Diego-based company has grown to be a multi-million dollar brand with more than 10,000 online orders each month. Their innovative marketing strategies and charity-minded business plan even earned the founders a spot on Forbes’ 2014 30 Under 30 List.
“We knew our customers loved us and we wanted a way for them to share that love,” said Griffin. “However, getting a significant amount of buyers to write reviews proved challenging.” Pura Vida wanted a way to generate a large volume of reviews and easily use these reviews in their marketing. They had tried out a few other review solutions, but Griffin explained, “We weren’t getting the results we needed, and we certainly weren’t seeing an increase in traffic and sales from reviews.”
“We tried out Yotpo because we’d seen positive feedback from other stores,” Griffin said. “Plus, it had some really awesome features we hadn’t seen in any other reviews solutions and was super simple to set up. We got it up and running in less than an hour.”
“Right away, we saw amazing results in terms of review volume, largely because of the in-mail review form,” Griffin said, “However, it was using these reviews in our marketing efforts that really grew the benefits exponentially.”
In one year with Yotpo, Pura Vida has already generated over 25,000 reviews. But the real magic for Pura Vida has been incorporating this user-generated content into their marketing strategy.
Griffin elaborated, “By offering a discount to customers who shared reviews on social, we started generating thousands of new orders a month. We’re averaging 17 customers a day sharing reviews on their social feeds and about 6,000 visits a month that come directly from reviews our customers shared to Twitter — talk about word-of-mouth marketing!”
Furthermore, Griffin incorporated reviews into Pura Vida’s Facebook Ad campaigns and saw amazing benefits.
“Although we were doing Facebook Ads and seeing strong results, we were happy for the opportunity to do more with Yotpo, as we were already seeing such success with our reviews,” said Griffin. “I didn’t think the ROI on our Facebook Ads could get any better, but it did!” They saw a 35% decrease in CPA on their Facebook Ads. Their most successful ad got a click-to-conversion rate of 17% and achieved a 255% ROI. Griffin was also able to easily see the outcome of his marketing efforts: “With Yotpo’s analytics dashboard, it was easy to track the results and see what exactly was working.”
